At first I felt a bit out of my element here. I consume plenty of video and audio media daily but having to be a creator of it for the first time was a bit overwhelming. Dr. Gaitlin was amazing when it came to giving us live demonstrations using new programs such as Audacity and imovie. She walked us through how to source materials and edit them together throughout the process which made me feel like It wouldn't be too bad. Giving myself enough time to "play" around with all the new programs helped ease my anxiety. I occasionally watched youtube tutorials if I got stuck on anything especially using the video editing program, I chose to use Adobe Premiere Pro instead, some of my classmate gave me the tip that it might be more of a headache. Once I understood the basics, it actually was quite fun and felt like I was collage building but with sound, image, and movie clips. The sound editing and digging for sounds was probably my favorite part. I listen to a lot of music and have always been fascinated by music production. I started my process collecting music and sound effects to encapsulate the vibes I wanted. To write the script, I started with brain dumping words. Then listened to the music again, I went back to the words and put them together as a poem. I recorded my voice then one by one tried finding the right track. Then placed the sound effects where I wanted to break the speech. Using my poem, I then started taking pictures and filming my studio space. After a day of edits and moving things around, I got my final product! I even added some easter eggs if you watched it past the credits. If there was something I would do over again, it would be to test out how the video looks on mobile devices. One feedback I got was that the text was too small. I wanted to make sure everyone could access this video easily therefore I also added subtitles on youtube. Overall, WOW! What a great way to tell a story! Each part of the process requires a fair amount of work, play, and edits. I have found a new appreciation for those who do this as a career, no matter how big or small the project is. I'm really interested to see how my students communicate through a medium like this in the future.
